Hi Everyone,

What a great time we had in Cleveland, OH, taping the latest "America Sews with Sue Hausmann" shows. Our son, Eric, joined Sue and I on my segment and I presented him with a Fabric Rag Bowl (from the book Quick and Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky) that I made for his birthday to match the quilt that our granddaughter, Amber (Eric's 17 year-old daughter), made for him. One of my greatest joys in life is seeing my family enjoy and share the art that I have spent most of my life creating.

Eric has long been interested in sewing arts, ever since I taught him free-motion embroidery when he was 10. Eric is one of Sulky's National Educators who travel and teach Sulky "Sew Exciting Seminars" and Sulky Guild Programs all across the country. At many consumer shows where Sulky exhibits, he works in the Sulky booth and teaches in various show venues. Be sure to stop and say hello to him when you have the chance.

We had so much fun on the set and, as usual, I brought enough for 2 shows. So Sue asked if we would talk more about the embellishments for the bowls as well as how to make lids on the next America Sews taping.

When I'm on overload or just in a state where I don't concentrate well, making these bowls is wonderful therapy for me. It's so simple and relaxing. With just a little fabric, a package of cotton clothesline, and a beautiful Sulky Cotton Blendable or other Sulky Decorative Thread, I've got a gift made in no time - maybe 3 hours. I often keep the scraps from quilts that I make for gifts, label them and, in the future when I want to make another gift for that person, I can quickly (and therapeutically) make up a matching Fabric Rag Bowl.

We did this technique in our very first book more than 20 years ago, using ordinary calico fabrics and Sulky 30 wt. or 40 wt. Rayon Threads. Since then we have introduced Sulky Rayon Multi-colors and Variegateds, Sulky 12 wt. and 30 wt. Cotton in Solid Colors and Blendables, and Sulky Sliver and Holoshimmer Metallic Threads. So, the bowls are not the plain calico bowls of old. With all of the beautiful fabrics we have today (including my personal favorite - beautiful batiks) and gorgeous Sulky threads, these bowls are anything but plain. They have become works of art and people are continually amazed that they were made on just a zig-zag sewing machine. You can make them country or contemporary just by your choice of fabrics, threads and embellishments. (More about the bowls below.)

Watch for this upcoming show on your local PBS-TV station and join us next time when we show you how to make your bowls bloom!

VISIT KAYE WOOD TV TO WATCH SULKY SHOWS FREE-ON-DEMAND!

As we mentioned last month, we just taped 10 new TV shows for kayewoodtv.com but, IN ADDITION to those shows, 10 of the original PBS-TV shows that we did with Kaye over the years are now available for you to watch, at your convenience, on this website.

Kaye is adding a new episode from these 10 new shows each week.

"I find it inspiring and soothing to 'listen' to the programs while I work on the computer. I open the program in one browser and work in another so there is no disruption to my work at any time. The thing I like best about this website is the ease of watching the shows. You don't have to sign up, you don't have to log in, you just go to the website, choose 'Category', choose 'Sulky', and let the good times roll! You can pause a program and do whatever needs to be done, then come back and continue watching or listening to it. It's 'sew' easy. Thank you Kaye for keeping it simple!" Patti Lee

UPCOMING SULKY TEACHER CERTIFICATION CLASSES

Following is a letter we received from Pam Greer, one of the students who, earlier this month, attended our Sulky Certified Teacher Training in Seattle, WA, which was taught by Linda Simmons, Sulky Freelance National Educator. Thank you Pam, and we hope that this is an inspiration to any of you who may be wondering if these classes can help you achieve your dreams.

"I had a great time at the Sulky Certified Teacher training, as always. This was my third Sulky Certified Teacher Training! I would like to tell you what this training has done for me:

Three years ago I took my first Sulky Certified Teacher Training. Linda Simmons really inspired me. During the 'Business of Sewing' session I learned great tips. I took the fabric manipulation bag we did and presented it to my local 'Top 20 in the U.S. Quilt Shop' and they loved it. I taught it three times. From there I developed and taught technique classes on fabric manipulation. This past class was an appliqué class but I resized the patterns to make children's clothes for dimensional appliqué. I then produced two patterns, one for a pillowcase with slashed cuff and a full size quilt with my appliqué. They have been selling out at the shop. A distributor has expressed interest in my pillowcase pattern.

I then built a website. I also started to crochet again and have taught crocheting. This past month, one of my original designs was in Crochet Magazine! That led to a small family yarn company back east asking me to design for them, and they want to purchase original patterns from me. I am also working with a company on their knitting and crochet software and may even have the opportunity to demo at trade shows.

Personally, I do not think any of this would have happened if it had not been for that first Sulky Certified Teacher Training that I attended. While I do not plan to retire from my day job until the end of 2010 (maybe a little earlier depending on what happens going forward), I can hardly wait due to my current success, and Sulky is a great part of it.

I would like to thank Sulky and your great instructor Linda Simmons for this opportunity. I plan to attend again next year" - Pam Greer

We hope you will join us at one of these upcoming Sulky Certified Teacher Training events and begin to achieve your dreams:

FREE Project of the Month

Child's Strip-Pieced Patchwork Vest

From the book, Patchwork Concepts in Sulky (#900B-9) By Joyce Drexler, Creative Director for Sulky of America, as shown on the "Sew Creative" PBS-TV show.

This cute little vest can be made using computerized embroidery designs (which are easily downloaded on the web today) or, if your machine doesn't have embroidery capability, you can use a children's print fabric that you love.

It would be a fun summer project to do with your children or grandchildren.

Enjoy!
