Hi Everyone,

I hope all of you are staying "afloat" in this turbulent economy. Lots of people are staying home more as a result of the gas issues and, as a consequence, are having many more enjoyable sewing times. Many of us are already planning a less costly Christmas by making a lot of our gifts.

In the spirit of saving gas (or any other excuse), my husband, Fred, and I recently rode our Honda Goldwing trike about 1100 miles each way from North Carolina to Des Moines, Iowa to tape a new "Love of Quilting" PBS-TV show with Fons and Porter. The show featured the appliquéd "Bird on a Log" sweatshirt (shown below), one of the projects from our newest book, An Updated Supplement to Sulky's Secrets to Successful Stabilizing, featuring my newest embroidery card, Fabulous Jumbo Ferns by Great Notions #3020GNP. Watch for it on your local PBS-TV station.

If you are interested in purchasing my Fabulous Jumbo Ferns embroidery card, check with your local sewing store or visit either speedstitch.com or greatembroiderydesigns.com.

I am so excited that our beautiful new book is done! I hope you love it, too! As we have done for each of our new books during the last 14 years, we have prepared a Sulky "Sew Exciting" Seminar based on the new book. It is a fun-filled, motivational seminar that will get you excited about creative sewing again, and just in time for the fast approaching holiday season. Encourage your local sewing store that sells Sulky Products to book the seminar today, and while you're there, look for the new book, or you can find a retail source near you at sulky.com.

As most of you know, we discontinued the Sulky Challenge several years ago mostly as a result of the direct hit that our Florida facility took from Hurricane Charley. Today, I am really delighted to be able to officially announce that Sulky is co-sponsoring the prestigious Hoffman Challenge, which has a long, rich history of encouraging and rewarding creativity. Since numerous past entrees in the Hoffman Challenge have featured extensive and often dramatic uses of Sulky Decorative Rayon, Metallic and Cotton Threads, we love being able to co-sponsor this Challenge going forward so that we can acknowledge and reward the best of future entrants who use Sulky Products. Consumers know they can Quilt with Confidence with Hoffman Fabrics and "Create with Confidence"™ with Sulky Products. Now, they can do it all in one big contest. Go to hoffmanchallenge.com for much more information and to fill out your online entry form.

I don't know where September has gone, but it seems that Fall always picks up speed. I always look forward to it because it is just such a pretty time of the year. With all that is going on in the world, it's good to stay present in the moment, count all the gifts we have in our lives, and treasure our family and loved ones.

Until next month - Express Yourself!

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

This is truly timely today - TWO WOLVES:

One evening an old Cherokee Indian told his Grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two 'wolves' inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought for a minute, and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf wins?" The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

FREE Project of the Month

A Herky-Jerky Sweatshirt

Designed by Kathleen Parman from the book, Sulky Secrets to Successful Appliqué (#900B-14).

This is really an easy and fun way to do free-motion quilting. Kathleen calls this technique "Herky-Jerky" because it actually encourages you to do a "scribbled" free-motion stitch. So for those of you who are still free-motion phobic - THIS is the project for you. You can use the heavy Sulky 12 wt. or 30 wt. Black Cotton Thread to add drama to the stitching to outline the flower appliqué. You will be hooked on this technique - it is just so much fun!
