SMOKY MOUNTAIN QUILT GUILDIt was a fun October in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Joyce Drexler, Patti Lee, Carol Ingram, and Nancy Sapin from Sulky, were the back-up team for Sue Hausmann, Sr. Vice President for VSM (Viking/Pfaff/Singer) and host of "America Sews with Sue Hausmann", for an event she presented to our local Smoky Mountain Quilt Guild. Sue was scheduled to fly into Cincinnati from Sweden, through Paris, on Sunday, October 12th and then drive the rest of the way to Franklin, NC that night to host the event on Monday morning. Well, of course, her plane was held up in Paris, and she did not get into Cincinnati until 7:30 Sunday night. So the 4 of us were prepared to host the event in case she didn't make it - but she did! So, in addition to Sue's fun and fabulous presentation, the guild got Joyce, Carol, Nancy and me (Patti) there to do mini-presentations as well. (This only happened because it is our hometown!)
Nancy's demo included her amazing corded bowls! She has just taken this technique and gone wild with it. (From the book Quick and Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky (#900B-16.) Patti Lee demo'd the ever-popular Faux Woven Scarf from the books: Sulky Secrets to Successful Stabilizing (#900B-11) and shown also with many other similar projects and techniques in the book Sulky Secrets to Successful Embroidery (#900B-15). The vest Patti is shown wearing at the end of this newsletter is also done with this same technique. Joyce showcased many of the projects from her newest book An Updated Supplement to Sulky's Secrets to Successful Stabilizing (#900B-17). Look for it now in your favorite sewing store or purchase it online at speedstitch.com. |

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTHTo get something you never had, you have to do something you never did. And with that in mind, here is the Free Project of the Month... |

FREE Project of the MonthEmbellished Vest from Fabric You Love!
We all have fabric that is just too pretty to use, and heaven-forbid we should cut it up! This is a twist on "Whole Cloth Vests" featured in a later book, Sulky Secrets to Successful Quilting (#900B-13) in which we used decorative threads to embellish the vests; but in the book, Patchwork Concepts in Sulky (#900B-9), Kathy shows you how to take a beautiful piece of fabric and use the design elements in that fabric to guide you to further embellish the fabric. Her techniques include: Couching down yarns, making couch weft fibers, knotted straps, as well as couching sequins, cross locked beads or molded beads, and then adding prairie points strategically on the garment. This project is fun and easy, and will inspire you to actually use some of your favorite fabrics and embellishing notions in your stash!
Kind regards,
Patti Lee |
